What it is: A structured, non-residential level of care for those with substance use disorders who need more than weekly therapy but not 24/7 treatment.

Level of care: Meets ASAM Level 2.1 (IOP) placement criteria.

Core services: Individual therapy, group therapy (9 hours per week), family/multi-family as indicated, and psychoeducation.

Weekly time:

9 group hours/week for adults, 3 days per week

6 hours/week for adolescents, 2 days per week

Duration: 4 (16 weeks) months, adjusted by progress and medical necessity.

Admission requirements: Recent diagnostic evaluation, individualized IOP treatment plan that names IOP as the intervention, and crisis/safety plans.

Insurance: Full Medicaid Benefits

Clients must not be in active use of alcohol or other substances at the time of admission to the Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP). A period of sobriety may be required prior to enrollment to ensure safety and readiness for treatment.

Program standards (NM): Matrix evidence-based practice is used at HS, which is trauma-informed and culturally/linguistically responsive, with an interdisciplinary team led by an approved clinical supervisor.

State approval: Provided by an agency holding New Mexico IOP approval/enrollment and complying with BHSD/MAD rules.

Co-occurring care: Addresses mental health and substance use together; coordinates with other providers as needed.

Not included: Hospital inpatient, residential levels of care, and partial hospitalization are outside IOP coverage.
